Pet Friendly Lake District Holiday Cottage

Time for a plug I’m afraid. Snow on the tops of the fells, wall to wall blue skies and glorious sunshine. Well else but the wonderful Lake District – right now. Where better to enjoy this weather than in our pet friendly Lake District Holiday Cottage, in Glenridding, near Ullswater, at the foot of Helvellyn.

Whilst the Lakes may be famous for wet weekends spent out on the fells in the mist feeling as miserable as the sheep, when the sun shines the Lake District is simply one of the best places to be – and it does shine more than you might think! So far this year we’ve had wonderful snow fall, glorious sunshine, and except for the odd torrential downpour, very little rain. So don’t delay and come and visit the Lake District now.

Our Lake District Holiday Cottage Accommodation

We have 2 holiday cottages located in an elevated position above the village of Glenridding near Ullswater. The cottages were built in the 19th Century as miners cottages for the old Greenside Mine, which is now the Helvellyn Youth hostel. These traditional Lakeland stone cottages sleep 4 people each in a large double and twin bedroom. Both have a modern bathroom with bath and power shower, and a downstairs living room/dining room with wood burning stove, freeview TV, and plenty of books, maps, DVDs and games to keep you amused in the evenings and if the weather does take a turn for the worse.

Dogs welcome in our Lake District Cottages

Our holiday cottages are in an ideal location for dog walking, backing as they do directly onto the fells. Cottage 1 also has a fully enclosed garden with magnificent views down the valley towards Glenridding and Ullswater, and across to the fells. The area around Glenridding, Patterdale and Ullswater has literally miles and miles of great walks including climbing the fells of Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Place Fell and many others.  For a more sedate dog walk there is Jenkins field down by the shores of Ullswater, and a walk to Patterdale past Lanty’s Tarn and down into the King George V playing field. The Ullswater Steamers is “pet friendly” and so you can take the dog across the lake from Glenridding to Howtown and then walk back along the side of the Lake to Patterdale – a great walk with beautiful views at the Lakeside. We recommend dropping down to the lake shore at Silver point to paddle and picnic!

Morgan in the Snow

Most of the pubs are very pet friendly, with the Travellers Rest in Glenridding just 500 yards from the cottages. The cottages themselves have a kitchen and utility room to dry off wet dogs and once they are all clean they are more than welcome to luxuriate on the rug in front of the wood burning stove in the living room!

Well behaved dogs are welcome to walk off the lead on most of the fells in the Lakes, but please take extra care especially in Lambing season (March/April through to May), and watch out for marauding cows who tend to be a little unfriendly to dogs (see archive post below!)

Glenridding and Ullswater

Ullswater in the Lake District

The cottages are located up the Greenside road in Glenridding. This small village is beautifully situated at the southern end of Ullswater. The village has several pubs, cafes and restaurants, as well as 2 village shops, a walking gear shop, and an excellent local garage. Nearby Patterdale has a great post office and village store, as well as a church and the famous White Lion Inn.

Glenridding makes the perfect base for exploring the whole of the Lake District and Cumbria, being just 20 minutes by car from Windermere (over Kirkstone Pass – a destination in itself), and easily accessible from the M6 at Junction 40 (Penrith). All the other main Lake District towns and villages such as Ambleside, Keswick and Grasmere can also be reached within 30 to 40 minutes by car. If you have a little more time you can even make it to the beaches of the beautiful Cumbrian coastline in about an hour.

Book Early to Avoid Disappointment

The cottages tend to book up fairly quickly so please plan ahead and book your pet friendly Lake District holiday with us now. We do offer short breaks in the quieter times of the year – please just contact us via our lake district cottage website for full details. We look forward to seeing you and your pet in the Lakes very soon!
