Follow the cows

If you want an accurate weather forecast follow the cows

It’s probably common knowledge but it’s been useful to me since I’ve been walking around here on a regular basis. The “facts” of the case seem to be that “if cows are close together then expect bad weather”. From a lake district point of view I’d add the observation that if the weather is going to turn then the cows will come down as low as they can go, but if it’s going to be fine weather then you’ll be suprised to see how high cows will wander up the fells in search of decent grass! Another common thought is that if they are lying down then it will rain. Well in my experience in and around the Lake District if this were true they’d never actually get up off the ground – so I’m not so convinced on this one!!
